Thomas B Goodloe Yesterday I bought one of these units to use as a drive Network Attached Storage for my Sonos music system. This device is perfect for the installation and exceeded my expectations. The setting for this machine is a snap. Sonos and my PC recognized zero problems. The transfer unit is about 70MB / s which is enough for my purposes. Also (and an important source for the Sonos), this device after inactivity and yet you can set how long wait before you go down (do not see any other unit in this price range that will do this). In addition, this unit is preformatted with NTFS file system to format it is not necessary, as with most external drives. Having a NAS unit with potential is excellent, because you need less hardware to the drive available for Sonos. Finally, because the unit has an on / off switch will not have to worry about losing the power that you have to convert it back (as with the old Linksys NSLU2) The only reason I did not take this five stars is because t "access through the web" part of the feature set is misleading. What you can expect is that this unit is available online through some type of connection without a PC to facilitate. Unfortunately, you need all those things that make this album accessible via the web. WD offers software to allow it, "MioNet" seems antiquated and dilapidated, not to mention not free. If you can not leave your PC that is acceptable to you, I recommend downloading the Opera browser and use of their "Unite" services that provide many of the same services that MioNet, but *. * Free In general, a strong and buy a good product. If you have a Sonos system and want their music available, then this is the album that you need. 67 out of 74 people found the following review helpful Reliable and fast by Richard C. Drew These devices are one of the "must haves" for the modern home entertainment center or home network. You can create multiple tasks - backups on media streaming. If you have a network, and just want a common place to store files that will do that. Need a streaming media server for your new TV or networked media player? Ditto. Automatic network backup? Check. I use it to store pictures and video. Because digital images only virtually (no more negative for safety!) Backups are a must. I keep multiple backups that photography is a hobby and a job. I have also attached a media streaming device to my TV, and they may have video, audio and display images from the Internet and the connected network devices to play. This device shows up on the list of network devices, and it is a few clicks to navigate to the desired medium. Streaming works perfectly. All you need is in the box. A short network cable, power supply, the network drives and CD installation is easy and simple installation. Connect the power cords and network, sitting at your PC, drop the installation CD and follow the instructions. You can not just plug in and go - you must run the installation CD. It is not just a player - it is a mini file server. You must set the permissions and user accounts. The first thing the installer did was check for an update. One was available, then I left the installation. It took about 25 minutes. This step can be ignored, but it is always a good idea to install the updates. After this was completed, I created a couple of user accounts - quickly and easily. You can create accounts for private storage, public, and determine who has access to this account. So little Billy can not see things from his sister, or any employee can have a private and public storage. Very practical and well executed. Also included backup software - PC, Mac, and a network automatically. I have not installed the software I used in the past and prefer the manual backup. Case: If you know the WD products, you will notice that all look the same. Them.
