Thomas B Goodloe Yesterday I bought one of these units to use as a network attached storage drive for my Sonos music system. This device is perfect for installing and exceeded my expectations. The installation program for this machine is a snap. My computer recognizes the Sonos system with zero points. The investment throughput is about 70MB / s that much for my purposes. Also (and an important feature of the Sonos), it will spin down after inactivity and lets you set how long it should wait before spinning down (have not seen any other device in this price range will do). In addition, this device is already formatted with the NTFS file system, so no it has to be repeated as with most external drives. Having a device with NAS capacity is excellent, because you need less hardware device available to Sonos. Finally, when the drive is not an on / off button, you will not worry if you have power, you activate it again (as with the old Linksys NSLU2) The only reason I don 't give it five stars lose the because of "access via the Internet" part of the feature set is misleading. What you can expect that this drive is available to help via the Internet through a sort of log and without the need for a PC. Unfortunately, you have to do all the things that drives accessible via the Internet. WD software provides "MioNet" box will appear dated and fragile, not to mention free. If you leave your PC on is acceptable to you, I recommend to download the Opera browser, and with their "Unite" service that many of the same benefits as MioNet, but for * free *. All in all, will provide a strong buy and a great product. If you have a Sonos system and want your music is available, then this is the correct drive. 72 of 80 people found this review helpful to reliably and quickly by Richard C. Drew These devices are one of the "must" for the modern home entertainment center or home networks. You can perform multiple tasks - from the flow of backup media. If you have a network, and you just want a common location to store files, it will. Need a media server for your new TV or a network media player? Ditto. Automatic network backup? Control. I use it to store photos and video. Since digital images are only virtual (not bad for security!) Backups are a must. I keep multiple backups, that photography is a hobby and a job. I also streaming devices connected to your TV, and can play back video images, audio and entertainment from the Web and networked devices. This device has the list of network devices, and a couple of clicks to reach the desired media. Streaming works fine. All you need is in the box. A short power cable network, the network unit and installation CD, installation is easy and simple. Connect power and network, sits on your PC, the fall in the installation CD and follow the steps. You can not just plug and play - you need to run the installation CD. This is not just a round disc - is also a mini file server. You need to set permissions and user accounts. The first thing we did was check the configuration of an update. One was available, so I let him install it. This took about 25 minutes. This step can be omitted, but it is always a good idea to install the updates. After this was completed I created a couple of user accounts - quickly and easily. Storage accounts can create private, public, and choose who has access to what you have. So little Billy can not see things his sister, or each employee may have a private storage area and the public. Really useful and well executed. It also includes backup software - PC, Mac and the network automatically. I did not install the software I used in the past, and prefer manual backups. Case: If you know the WD products, you will realize that they all have the same appearance. Are.
