Works as advertised, but I had a few unexpected surprises By Nathan Arthur Product works exactly as advertised, and is very convenient to have and I'm glad I bought it. It's easy to configure and exceptionally easy to use. But I have two gripes about issues that I didn't discover until after I got it (but which are well-documented on Eye-Fi's website): 1) With my camera (a Nikon D40), the camera won't leave the power on to the card long enough after a picture is taken, so the pictures don't get uploaded. The workaround is easy - turn the camera off and back on. But it's annoying to have to remember to do that, because that's the point of the card - to not have to think about it. (Of course, this is really Nikon's fault, not Eye-Fi's, but it affects me nonetheless.) 2) The Eye-Fi has a feature that lets it upload both to a home computer and to a website (like Flickr or SmugMug). I knew that the Eye-Fi supported doing the uploads also to an FTP site, and I planned on using that feature to let it upload pictures to my home web server from anywhere I could get a wi-fi connection. It turned out that there were a number of problems with that plan: a) It only uses "FTPS" while "SFTP" would have been much easier for me to set up, and much more secure b) The pictures all go through Eye-Fi's servers before going to the FTP site, which I didn't realize (and this part isn't especially well documented), and I'm not OK with that c) It takes a long time for the pictures to actually make it from the card to Eye-Fi to the FTP server, so it was very hard to trust that the system was working reliably d) There's no way to tell the Eye-Fi to then NOT upload the pictures via my home wifi, if they were uploaded via FTP. So I just don't use the "upload via FTP" feature, and that's fine. So like I said, it's a good product that does what it says, so if you just want it to do the base things, go for it! On the other hand, if you have a D40, or you want to use it to upload to a home FTP site, consider this review before doing so. 48 of 50 people found the following review helpful. I LOVE IT! Except.... By J. Jenkins I bought this because I take a LOT of pictures. I was afraid I would break the little tab that keeps my battery door closed because I am always taking the SD card out and putting it in my computer! The other problem is that I would often leave the SD card in the computer and wouldn't have any storage when I went out. The Eye-fi card eliminates these problems. Exactly what I wanted it for. The ONLY problem I have is that it won't let me take video in the Eye-fi sd card. This is a problem, because if I want to take video I have to put another SD card in, which is not convenient! So, if you don't take video with your camera, then the Eye-fi does exactly what it says it does and it's fantastic. Another nice feature is that the EYE fi lets you pick pictures you want to automatically share on your Facebook or other social networking site. Something I will take advantage of soon. 37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Works Perfectly By P. McConnell i bought this because i got tired of taking the SD card out of the camera every time i was finished taking pictures. i was a little skeptical about how well it would really work but i gotta say i'm impressed. i use a Mac and the software install was a breeze, if you are in range of your wireless network every picture you take is individually sent to the computer within 3-5 seconds. if you are away from your wireless network simply power on the camera when you get home and all the pics are uploaded instantly. as soon as i open iphoto it instantly imports all the photos and they are ready to view. this definitely makes my picture taking much easier !!! You need a fast N Router to have flawless streaming content By Souroosh Soheili I see that a number of reviewers here are disappointed with the wireless streaming content (ie Netflix). I had the same issue until I switched my wireless router. You need a good N router that is specifically optimized for streaming video. I replaced my router with a Vizio XRW100 and the bluray player works perfectly. 37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By Jan We tried and returned the preceding model. So we picked this one up with a bit of concern. The sales folk assured us that Sony had fixed it's failings, and they have a good return policy where we bought, so we gave Sony a second chance. It works beautifully, even with Netflix. Video streams properly via wifi, and the unit has remained responsive at all times. On blu-ray the machine responds to commands instantly. The remote is well designed and easy to use. As I recall, one concern we had with this unit was that Amazon streaming video was not advertised on the box. However, the unit does in fact support Amazon. All-in-all, the unit works as designed and desired. 24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. BluRay with WiFI and a newer router By J. C. Danko We have been researching BluRay for a while since my son has built up a large collection of BD disks he plays on his PS3, the original BluRay and still probably the best for playing BD. He wanted to give one to his mom for her birthday so we went halfies on the BX58 with wireless. I also bought a newer wireless router, Buffalo WHR-HP-GN. (See my review of that product.) The BX58 and the new Buffalo work together perfectly with my fairly fast Comcast cable internet. The configuration was relatively painless. I used the WDS PIN registration method and had no problems establishing a working wireless network connection. To wirelessly rout to one of these TV related internet devices I would urge everyone to buy the best new technology router available. The Buffalo WHR-HP-GN is less than $40 on Amazon and a lower power version is less than $25. They have a mixed mode of encryption that eliminates a lot of compatibility problems across a range of devices. One little deficiency in wireless setup: My encryption key uses a "-". The BX58 has no "-" available on the virtual keyboard used for input. The WDS PIN registration does not require an entered key so I dodged that problem. We watched a BD and the load time was about 30 seconds. I went to the BX58 device registration menu where it wanted to do firmware upgrade to rev. 319. Instead of using the internet download method I checked SONY support web site and downloaded the firmware and burned a CD. The instructions recommend using OSX (apple) but not to worry. My Windows 7 notebook and the freeware ImgBurn software created a disk that worked just fine. The BX58 internet section lists a large number of preset websites for video, music and social. I am sure a large number of them, such as Michael Jackson, are somehow related to Sony Corp. We have been sampling to test the device and internet access is seamless and reliable. I can even access the files on other PCs on my network. So far we like it a lot. I am having a bit of difficulty integrating the BX58 into my entertainment system mainly getting it to work the way we want with my Harmony remote. If you need BluRay Wireless internet, IMHO, this is the way to go. See all 27 customer reviews...

THEN it wouldn't transfer a file over 100kBytes! I finally returned it after 3 calls to India for customer support. I bought an I/OMega unit (same specs) "Home Media Network Hardrive". It took 5 minutes to connect it and run the CD. PnP! See all 1 customer reviews...

Cirago CMC 1000 - Stay AWAY By Felix Rokhvarger If you looking for solution to view your digital photos, video, music and be able to have DVR capability with no monthly fees - Cirago could be an affordable device that could do this for you if it would not be a Junk. The Bad: 1. Customer supports none existent. 2. Week remote control, operating distance is too short. Universal control improves the distance, but a problem is within Cirago unit itself. 3. Slow operating system and questionable firmware makes this unit worst on the market. 4. In the process of files and folders selection jumps through several lines, in most cases does not accepts the remote commands from a first attempt or responds with long delay. 5. On power on, system intermittently does not find Network drive, ether on wired or wireless Network, and restart is required several times to make the system find the drive. 6. On power on, system intermittently does not produce the sound output and restart is required several times to make the system work. 7. Internal Hard Drive recording capability only for FAT32 system only. 8. LAN hardware is limited to 10/100. The good: 1. Plays all video formats I tried so far. 2. Plays all audio formats I tried so far. 3. Records live TV and any Audio-Video source connected to the unit. 4. Pauses live TV up to 30 Minutes. 5. Picture quality is good. My recommendation is to stay away from this product, instead purchase WD TV Live as a media player. Unfortunately I was not able to find decent combination of DVR and Media Player as of today. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. STAY AWAY! By D. L. Prescott I got it very quickly, it's nothin bad on amazon's end but on the cirago end, its big and bulky, the face was loose, felt like it was going to fall off, So i power this thing up for the first time, im thinking coo! Then I hook it up to my computer and try to transfer files and it says drive not recognized on WinXP Pro, Then it shut down on me, that was the end of the story, its goin back now. I would stay away from this. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Not sure if it's worth it By adman Isn't as easy to use as described as a DVR or to record shows on the tv. Still haven't figured out how to label shows with the name of the tv show so have to go thru them to find the right one. Some of the controls are a little confusing to figure out because the directions aren't the greatest. Was going to return this but it took 2 weeks to get here and then after trying to figure it out it had been several days over the 30 days from date of order. We'll see how it does as an actual external harddrive but we ordered it for the DVR capabilities and it isn't worth the price to me. Slowly figuring it out so maybe my mind will change when we get it all figured out. See all 6 customer reviews...

I had very little complaints with it so I didnt switch to this because I hated the WDTV I bought this because I wanted a second device like this and wanted to give the freeagent theater+ hd a try. Anyway It works great videos play good and I have tried MKV,AVI,MP4, and all kinds of audio formats and all work great. Also a plus this has DTS where the WDTV does not or at least the first gen I have does not. So a pro con list now. Pros: -Plays all my audio and video formats great. -Plays YouTube videos well. -Detects HDD and Media fast! -Nice Menu interface. Cons: -I cant have more then 100+ Videos on a HDD without it messing up the list. It names them wrong and goes crazy if I scroll fast and overall does not work if I have more then 100+ Videos on my HDD and view them with the main Videos Icon on the interface. I have to go to devices then usb then view them by folders my WDTV did folders automatically. -It does not power down my external HDD when it is off. -Does not save prefrence to keep list view over thumbnail view after shutdown. Overall I give it 4 Stars. I like it and am keeping it but would like to see some firmware updates to address my issues. Otherwise I would recommend this device to others. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Perfect, Exactly what I wanted, Thanks Seagate By Shawn McKeough This is exactly what I was looking for, I have a Buffalo 2TB NAS that i have my movie, music and photo collections on and i wanted to be able to access them on my Samsung 47IN HDTV. The Seagate Freeagent Theatre+ HDMedia Player Station was a breeze to set up, well setup consisted of pluging in the AC, connecting via Ethernet to my home network through a Netgear Switch, connect to my TV via HDMI, the Seagate Freeagent Theatre+ HDMedia Player Station took about 60 seconds to search and detect all shared media on my network, not only on the Buffalo 2TB NAS but also on all the computers connected to the the network with shared media. Great playback for all forms of media, music, movies and photos. The remote is very simple and the batteries are included. This great unit also has a dock for the Seagate Freeagent usb hard drives. i would recommend this to everyone who wants a simple, fast setup and user friendly to be able to access all your media collections on their HDTV. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Took a chance on this Samsung and ordered it without a lot of information availabe because it is so new but glad I did. Just got it out of the box today and everything works great. Easily set up the wireless to my home network (and it saved the IP address and encryption key info so I do not need to sign on each time). There are few units (if any) with all the features this unit offers at this price. This unit offers solid access to You Tube, various videos on demand services, Pandora (love Pandora!), and it sees all my videos and photos on my computer in multiple ways (with their Samsung PC Share Manager and direct acess) all through the network. The pics load a little slow, but the files are big. Pretty sure if I reduce them down access will speed up. Decent You Tube search feature (for a TV remote as a typing device). Easily found my own You Tube videos. In any case, all locked in solid with minimal hassle. I would give it 5 stars except there is still a learning curve on managing my PC folders and I am still getting the hang of some Samsungs apps, but I am confident it will all work out. I initially entered the encyption key incorrectly and did not get a password error but instead it just said the IP address was wrong. A restart with the right key resolved all. The first HD video I played was a home video made on my Canon HD Vixia HF200 consumer video camera and it looked absolutely great. For a first view, this player is excellent. Canon VIXIA HF200 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 15x Optical Zoom I already have a Samsung 40 inch LCD HD TV so I also figured they would compliment each other. Oh, by the way, I had a customer service issue that was not the fault of Amazon and they resolved it in grand fashion. Absolutely superb customer serivce. Superb. Yep, I am a happy camper with the whole deal ============================================================ March 17 - update I continue to enjoy this player. I had one blue-ray disc that did not work right - a rental, subsequent discs worked fine. I also see services being added. A few free games (nothing great, but there), Blockbuster on Demand is now installed, weather, USA today, and more is coming. Still, my favorite feature by far is being able to view shared files on the TV from my laptop computer through a wireless connection via the home network. Viewing seemed a bit slow at first, but once I began compressing the JPEG's to a more "uploadable" size, they snapped through slideshows with ease. Camcorder videos formatted to WMV are easily played from my laptop and watched on the TV - and they are smooth. It is just so cool to create it on my laptop and watch it on my TV. Just amazing stuff. Love it. Had to re-enter my encyption key once right after a software update but other than that one time, have not had to enter a password again. One other software update had no effect. I upped the rating to 5 star. It is excellent. I am already beginning to take it for granted like a good chair that always just works. Not sure what else I can possibly expect at this price. 577 of 607 people found the following review helpful. Mixed results with Internet features, keeping player for now By Kevin K. Fosler I plan on keeping this review up to date, so as things change I will keep adding to it. I will also try to answer any questions in comments. April 2, 2010 I received this player from Amazon today. Within the first hour I had it hooked up to my home theater system, connected to my wi-fi network, updated the firmware over the web, connected to Netflix, and connected to Pandora. At that point I was ready to log in to Amazon and post a 5 star review. I am glad that I held off because there have been a few problems, but not enough to make me want to return the player. Even though I have the latest firmware, 1009.1, Vudu does not

Best placeshifter/streamer in the market + free mobile players By ScOObydoo So far I've only tested this as a remote streaming device and have not experimented much with the DVR. I will update as soon as I've done more. Streaming quality is the best out there. I've been through the original Slingbox, the Slingbox Solo, the Pro-HD and the various HAVA boxes, and this thing is simply outstanding. I've tested in-house streaming and remote streaming to my laptop on WiFi and 3G and my smartphone on 3G. In all cases, the video quality is almost as good as watching a locally stored video file. The price appears to be high, but when you compare it with the $261 for a Slingbox PRO-HD, it is a bargain. The Sling lacks DVR, local TV watching, internal storage, placeshifting and more. Sling also charges $30 for their mobile clients, while the Vulkano mobile players are free. There are a few bugs in the setup process, but this thing is just out, so I'll cut them some slack to get those sorted out. If you do not need a lot of DVR storage, stick with the cheaper version of this box. PROS: Can use as a full (single tuner) DVR Can control for live TV and DVR on a mobile device Free mobile players Amazing streaming quality CONS: No internal tuner Single DVR channel only Does not appear to support network storage Requires EXT3 formatted harddrive for video storage, with no "format drive" option to enable use of your own drives 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Currently, the Vulkano is your only reliable solution.... By Sally J. Peace Take my word for it. Until Sling fixes the capacitor issue, from their current models, pass on them. Sling is using the failure rate to generate more income from support calls. All you have to do to verify this is to Google it. As far as Vulkano's reliability, only time will tell. But so far, I am super happy. A quick overview of my setup: The Vulkano hook up is: Network: Wired and segmented 100mb cat5 To TV: HDMI From DVR: Component Storage: 500gb eSATA drive The Vulkano setup went without a hitch except for what is listed below. Vulkano found the network and grabbed an IP address with no problems. Vulkano includes all the cables for a complete setup, so no searching or shopping for last minute connections. The only issue I ran into was setting up the IR Blaster with my Verizon FiOS HD DVR. It is a Motorola QIP 7216-1, which was not a choice available. Instead I chose the 6416 which works perfectly. Once the Vulkano was up and running, I watched a few channels to make sure we were all set. Now for the clients. I will start with the Apple client, first. I tested the Apple app on a Iphone 3g (wifi only) and a Touch 4g. Both clients installed and setup went perfectly. Both devices were connected onto a 54mb (G) network at Barnes and Noble. With the strongest signal, quality was exceptional on all channels. Even sports channels looked fantastic without a trace of smearing or blocking. Bitrate was between 600-900K starting out. It topped out at 2500K and was optimized on-the-fly. Sound was superb with no dropouts. Channel changes went smoothly with a 5 second (approx.) buffering after the change. I felt the channel changes were timely and precise. I would have to say that on wifi, the Apple client for the Vulkano, is a win. The pc client was updated the last night, or so. So, I have not had the time to go over all of the settings. Install went well on a Windows 7 x64 laptop. I will not go over all of the features but talk about quality, instead. This is for the previous client Vulkano_V1.8.3.52. At first I was getting some stuttering, but no dropouts. I also noticed that when stuttering it was while trying to optimize the stream. So I reduced the stream limit from 2000K to 1000K. this took care of the stuttering and never had a hiccup after that. The newer client is supposed to recover from optimizing much quicker. But

Seagate WiFi Adapter By Dallas Woolley I purchased the Seagate WiFi adapter (wireless N 300MB) for my Seagate Theatre+ media player. Unfortunately you can't get this adapter here in Australia yet so I had a family member pick it up for me when they were in the USA recently. The adapter is very small and has good build quality and easily slotted in to the USB slots on the media player. After turning on the WiFi network option in the settings menu the adapter was found and I entered the password for my home network. The streaming quality is excellent. I have been watching DivX movies over the network without fault. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I'm still waiting for my order. By Jason Ng Totally crap. The item was "In Stock" when I ordered it but it's been almost 2 months now and still hasn't turned up. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great idea if it worked By Chris I bought this seagate wifi adapter for my seagate freeagent theater +. The wifi adapter comes with no instructions, so when it didn't work as promised I had to call seagate. After 2 hrs on the phone with seagate they informed me that the technical department at seagate was not equipped to help me with issues between the seagate wifi adapter specifically made for the seagate freeagent media player... And it gets better... They then transferred me to the department(based in India of course) that handles the more difficult technical issues (between their own products?). They were only going to charge me the discounted rate of $14.95 per half hour! To help me diagnose why the 2 products I had just purchased from them 2 days earlier wouldn't work together... Needless to say those were the last two products I will ever purchase from seagate! See all 5 customer reviews...

I called Buffalo tech support and they advised me to and reset the device and update the firmware. That resolved the permissions issue. My only regret would be I didn't opt for the larger hard disks becasue I have the drives mirrored. other than that it's been about a week and no issues whatsoever. My only complaint is the drive access and cover should have been made a little more sturdy, that said the unit is quite and sleek looking. I noticed some reports in the Buffalo forum about Win 7 systems dropping the drive mappings but no such issues on my WinXP, Vista and Linux Ubuntu systems. I have local & remote access 24/7, I'm happy with my new NAS 19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Excellent NAS By Justin E. Hester I had originally wanted to go with the Seagate BlackArmor unit but it was out of stock and after reading a number of reviews decided to go with the Buffalo unit. I'm very glad I did. Despite what some other reviewers have indicated, this current model works wonderfully and even in a mirrored raid has good response times. Of course the initial process of backing up and copying over data took a while but honestly, when running something in a raid configuration I'm not really expecting thumbdrive or SSD transfer rates. Considering it was transferring most of the data via wireless and in a raid configuration, it was fairly quick (approximately 5 hours from 4 systems simultaneously and a total of 200GB). Some may complain about this but I think those folks are expecting the unrealistic idea of copying from an internal 7200 RPM SATA to another internal 7200 RPM SATA. The reality is this was going over a wireless network and writing to 2 physical drives, not just one. So from my perspective this was a totally acceptable and quick data transfer. Reading from it is far quicker since it only needs to access a single drive for reading purposes and I can stream audio with no issues. I don't currently have any video to stream other than a handful of music videos that are scaled for 1024 x 768 and they steam without issues as well. All in all, a great purchase for the price and I already know that Buffalo stands behind their product. I know a few corp and state agencies that regularly use Buffalo NAS's in RAID for system wide backups, etc. 13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Great Product By Brad Bouchard I am an AV Integrator and frequently use this product as a DNLA server for a wide variety of installations including AV receivers and Sonos music systems, I even have one at home. Works right out of the box without an extreme amount of IT knowledge. The IP interface is a little jargon filled as it can be used for a huge variety of backup tasks but as a music server I can't give it anything but praise. Cheap, quiet, solidly built. Thanks Buffalo. I think I may be the first on the entire www. It is a great little device. Granted most people looking for a true backup solution will shun this for only having the single bay, but for my simple needs, I was fine with a single bay. I just can't bring myself to make a backup of a backup. I figure I'm ahead of the game for having the one backup. The unit itself is metal, and very easy to load the HDD (I am using a spare 750 gb I had laying around). Installation of the software was also very easy. I can mount various sub-folders within the server, which will make network backups a snap. The options for how you set this thing are limitless, and it really is not that difficult. I haven't tried to stream any media yet, but based on what I have seen thus far, I 'd say it will be great. If you are looking for a media server/NAS this can't be beat. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great features, performance just ok, reliability so-so By N. Erath This network drive enclosure has excellent features - background downloads, multimedia server, http and ftp servers - pretty much what ever you want to do is in there, and the price can't be beat. It has a cooling fan but runs very quiet, unnoticeable in my family room.Cons: Performance as a network disk drive is slow (I measured write speed at about 6 MB/s), not like accessing a true network server. I also find that every once in a while the unit would simply stop sharing the volumes, and a reboot is needed to correct it. I've also had difficulty getting external esata drives to work reliably, and now having enabled RAID-1 to an external drive I can't seem to convert it back to stand alone - no operational issue but the admin interfaces shows the unpaired internal drive as running "degraded".Overall tho, its a great value and does quite a lot. 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Limited for use as Squeezebox Server By Daniel Clingaman I had to return the first NAS 210 due to a defect. ZyXel support was very helpful with trouble shooting the problem and determining that the device was defective. I bought it as a server for my Squeezebox Boom internet radio. The American site for ZyXel had an older version of Squeezebox Server (don't recall the number) that did not work. There were significant changes made to Squeezebox Server and only a later version (7.4.1)would work with the radio. A web search provided information on how to get a later version of Squeezebox Server for the NAS 210 through a European ZyXel site. This has worked fine for the SB Boom. However, I have subsequently purchased a Squeezebox Radio that can be operated with a battery. The SB Radio requires an even later version (7.4.2)of SB Server than that needed for the Boom radio. I contacted ZyXel and was informed that they have to purchase a license for the SQ Server from LogiTech/Squeezebox to be able to include it as part of the NAS 210. Apparently a new license must be bought for every upgrade of the SB Server software and they have not purchased the license for the version necessary to run SB Radio on battery power. This isn't a major big deal for me as I needed the server to listen to BBC IPlayer which does work with version 7.4.1. Personal music that is stored on the ZyXel 210 will not play on SB Radio without the later version (7.4.2). I believe the NAS 210 is also slower than some other servers and it does not allow me to stream to my radios at the highest audio quality available through Squeezebox. Still, it does MP3 just fine which is really good enough for my needs. The NAS 210 is a very affordable server with a surprising number of features for the price. I would recommend it. Most helpful customer reviews 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I love it, but it's far from perfect and not for everyone By Nena Brazil Why I love it: - Value: I set out to buy the 1T, but the price difference to double it to a 2T was irresistible (no regrets - in 4 months I'm getting close to completing my first "T"); - It reads all video files and has no problem reading separate subtitle files; - Fast uploading and downloading; - Excellent to browse through video files (it keeps a running clip on the left corner with both audio and video while the list of video files still appears on the right. You can start it from the beginning or from where the clip is at); - If you don't unplug it from the outlet, it will keep track of where you were in a video file (in many, many video files at a time). Why it is far from perfect: - There's a delay between pressing a button and getting something actually done (when watching a video file, this can be quite annoying); - The HDMI cord that 'comes with' is too short (investing in a good one helps considerably with the remote control delay, but does not solve it completely); - Fast forwarding can be a little frustrating 'till you get the hang of it, rewinding is even worse; - Really terrible to browse through photos (long delays between clicks). Is this the device for you? I bought it specifically for two things: to back up multiple computers and to watch video files. Once the HDMI cord was replaced and the remote delay "leftover" was mastered everything was fine, but if you are thinking about going through travel photos on TV, without getting people to scream for mercy, this is not the device for you. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. 850+ movies and counting By Drtyhobo This is a really cool product. A buddy of mine had one so he was able to transfer overr 850 movies onto mine. There is probably room for another 50 to 60. Its plug and play...easy to use and great for consolidating your movie collection. Now I can sell all my dvds and my apt wont look like a asian teenagers college dorm. Amazon did take almost a month to ship it to me because it was lost in the mail or something, but I didn't really care about that...it happens. really cool product...it's slick, small and connects to my system using hdmi which makes everything easier. I got mine for $199.99 exactly and my buddy got his for $240 (lowest price around) a few months before I got mine. Don't pay more than that unless it's the 2 terabyte version. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I would buy this 100 times! By Arikur Excellent! We recently reviewed the NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+, a network attached storage device, or NAS, that's built for small offices and work groups. We were so impressed with its performance that we decided to test NETGEAR's home-user model, the ReadyNAS Duo, to see if it measures up to its bigger sibling's performance. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1.3em; } td.think { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; border-bottom: 1px dotted #000000; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; } td.glance { height: 100%; background: #9DC4D8; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-top: 10px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; } The ReadyNAS Duo can serve as a digital media server for your home. View larger. We're happy to report that the ReadyNAS Duo rivals the NV+, but at a fraction of the price. Built for the home-user and home office, this compact, powerful, and surprisingly quiet and energy-efficient device has just about everything you need to keep your digital media easily accessible and protected. Unfortunately we don't have the space to describe everything we admire about this outstanding NAS device. What we can describe are several features that stood out, including its compact design and easy set-up, quiet and energy-efficient performance, web-, print-server and advanced media streaming features, and its outstanding data protection capabilities. (Our review of the ReadyNAS NV+ covered the system's RAID array functionality, as well several other features that the Duo shares.) In short, this is an advanced NAS device that anyone who is serious about digital media should consider for their home network. Easy Set-Up and Compact Design In addition to this 500 GB version, the NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo comes with 750 GB, and 1 TB capacities. The models share identical features, with the difference being the amount of storage in each. The version we tested, the RND2150, included a single 500 GB SATA drive in a hot-swappable carrier with room for a second drive alongside it. (Each of the models ships with a single hard disk drive and can be easily upgraded for data redundancy by installing a second compatible disk drive of equal or higher capacity. The new disk drive will automatically mirror the first drive.) While the initial set-up with the system's extremely intuitive interface took less than 20 minutes, getting the information for the more advanced-user procedures took a bit more time. NETGEAR does not ship the Duo with extensive user guides. Instead, users are directed to ReadyNAS's online community forum (www.readynas.com) for advanced set-up procedures and add-ons. While navigating the forum for information can be time consuming, the site is constantly updated by NETGEAR developers and community members. We found information easy to locate and well presented. Like the NV+, users do not need an technical background to configure the Duo. However, a knowledge of network basics, and an ability to search for and install basic files is a must. And anyone with even a modicum of networking experience will find the Duo a breeze to work with. The Duo is smaller than a breadbox and is constructed with a sturdy metal chassis and door. It includes a Gigabit Ethernet port and two USB 2.0 ports on the back, and an extra USB port at the front along with a "backup" button. With two drive bays, you can easily upgrade the Duo for data redundancy. View larger. The Duo is designed to work with virtually any USB storage device and USB printer. We began by plugging a flash drive, external hard drive and a printer directly into the Duo. In each case, the devices appeared as shared drives on our network computers, and the printer connected to the device without a hitch, giving the networked computers instant printing abilities. Overall Set-Up and Design Grade: A- We would prefer to have more documentation included with the hardware, but the online forum is an excellent source of information. Quiet and Energy-Efficient Performance A huge plus for us is the ReadyNAS Duo's quiet performance. A fan sits at the back of the device, softly humming. Although we disagree with the NETGEAR marketing materials and wouldn't sleep with the Duo, we wouldn't hesitate to set it alongside a home theater system, or in another common area. Compared to many other NAS devices, the ReadyNAS Duo is as quiet and unobtrusive as they come. In an idle state, our single-disk Duo consumes only 27 Watts of power (or about 35 Watts with two drives installed), and a bit more than that with disk activity. In disk spin-down mode, power consumption goes down to a mere 12 Watts. This is a huge savings when compared to the 100 Watts or more from most computers with comparable storage and RAID abilities. The Duo also lets you schedule partial or complete shut downs for additional efficiencies. So if you plan to use the device as your primary digital media server or for scheduled back ups of your data, these energy savings will quickly add up. Overall Power Performance and Noise-Level Grade: A What a relief to keep our carbon print (and electricity bills) low--quietly and unobtrusively. Web Server and Advanced Media Streaming Features Our primary reason for wanting the Duo was to serve our digital media from a single source and reduce the work load of our personal computers. With the Duo, you can kiss goodbye the need to keep your computers running when you want to stream media files. The Duo can connect via your network to such devices as the NETGEAR EVA8000, Sonos Digital Music System, Logitech Squeezebox, Apple iTunes clients, Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360. In fact, it will work with just about any DLNA-compliant device. Once we loaded our entire music collection onto the server and launched the Duo's built-in iTunes server, our music was immediately available through iTunes on our personal computers. But what really made us smile was that our digital music became instantly available through our Logitech Squeezbox player, bypassing our computers entirely. This means that we now have 24/7 wireless access to our entire digital music collection without having to turn on our computers. On the down side, because the Duo's SlimServer add-on does not offer the software's most recent updates, functionality is slightly compromised, but the advantages of instant, uninterrupted access to our music library far outweighs those inconveniences. The ReadyNAS Duo can serve files to all your computers and compatible media players in your home. We were also able to access our personal video files seamlessly through our networked computers. While we found performance to be virtually indistinguishable from playing the files directly on our hard drives, if we were streaming HD video over our wireless network we would have needed to use Wireless-N to ensure steady performance. (If you're looking to do this NETGEAR recommends a purpose-built product called the 5GHz Wireless-N Bridge Kit, or one of their 200MB Powerline Network Adapters.) We also found that editing large raw video files was best accomplished directly off our local hard drive and uploading the edited files to the Duo, but this was more a function of our network connections than it was with the Duo's performance. NETGEAR's FrontView web-based control panel makes configuration and administration simple. View larger. Another nice touch is the Duo's Web server capability. With about 20 minutes of configuration time, you can serve your own personal Web Site or blog. Set-up was much easier and quicker than uploading to a remote hosting site. Obviously, if you have visions of launching the next hot social network site, neither the Duo (or your Internet connection) will be able to handle the traffic. But for your own Web site or personal blog, it will stand up nicely. Overall Web Server and Media Streaming Grade: B+ Once ReadyNAS is able to update firmware concurrently with the media device updates, you'll never need a computer to serve your media files again. Advanced Data Protection What truly allows the Duo to live up to its "advanced NAS" moniker is it wealth of data protection features, especially its X-RAID technology, "Continuous Data Protection or CDP," and its scheduled back up abilities. Just add a second 500 GB disk drive into the empty bay, and the ReadyNAS Duo will automatically build a mirror of the first drive by copying every byte from the first drive to the second one. In case of any hard drive failure, the data is protected. We had a SATA 500GB drive on hand, so we tried this. It was as easy as securing the drive with four screws onto the carrier and plugging the drive in. The data mirroring is taken care of automatically on the fly by the unique X-RAID. ReadyNAS Duo also includes a feature we're enthralled with called "Shadow" that not only backs up folders and files every time you save them on your computer, but also gives you the ability to save and revert to previous versions of the files. If your local file is lost or corrupted, you simply right click on the back-up file on the Duo to restore it to its original location. Every user on our network accessed this feature without a glitch. As featured on the Duo, CDP is a powerful way to keep your files protected. And to keep the files on the Duo protected, we scheduled back-ups to a connected external USB drive. The Duo flawlessly performed a full back up the first time, and incremental back ups thereafter. And a convenient "back-up button" located on the front of the device lets you back up your entire system, or parts of it, with a single click. With the X-RAID and the backup features provided by the Duo, you'll never have an excuse to lose a byte of data again. Overall Data Protection Grade: AWith the Duo, we will have to work hard to ever lose data again. Conclusions The ReadyNAS Duo is a powerful, attractive, and flexible NAS device that is great for a home network. It offers much of the functionality of a dedicated server, but since set up is mostly plug-and-play, it does not require a dedicated IT personnel to manage. As noted, the manual does not give all the answers. Fortunately, the strong online community and Web forums offer excellent support and services. And finally, the ReadyNAS Duo is backed by an industry-leading 5-year warranty, so you can rest assured that you'll be protected should anything go wrong. What's in the Box ReadyNAS Duo with 500 GB hard disk drive, two hard disk trays, quick installation guide, warranty card, power adapter, power cable, Ethernet cable, ReadyNAS Installation CD and Discovery Utility, and NTI Shadow for ReadyNAS for Windows and Macintosh.

Comparison of ReadyNAS Duo, Iomega ix2, LaCie, HP for small office use By Edward Barnett This product is one of a number of network attached storage (NAS) devices on the market targeted at small offices and home users. If you're not familiar with NAS devices, the concept is simple: A NAS device contains one or more hard drives and plugs directly into your network (i.e., your router). When compared to simple USB hard drives that plug directly into a computer, a NAS offers a number of advantages: 1) It is accessible to any computer on your network. This is convenient at home, since you can use the NAS as a central repository for files (documents, photos, music files, etc.) that you might want to access from any of a number of different PCs. In a small office, having a central storage location for key files (client documents, contact lists, etc.) can be critical. 2) In principle, you could achieve the same benefit by attaching a big USB drive to one PC, setting that PC up to share its files, then leaving that PC on all the time. But these NAS devices are better optimized for file sharing, use far less energy, and take up far less space than a full PC. 3) Most of these NAS devices have something called RAID. They have (or allow you to install) multiple hard drives in the same unit, then they write every bit of data to multiple drives. This way, if one drive fails (as they are prone to do), the NAS can automatically switch over to the other drive and you don't lose any data. One HUGE warning, though - RAID only protects you from drive failure. NAS devices still have plenty of "single points of failure," including the power supply, controller, etc. I lost all of my data on a LaCie Network Disk because of a software glitch in the unit, even though all the individual drivers were fine. RAID reduces your risk of losing files, but it does not eliminate it. 4) Because the NAS is always available to any PC on the network, it's a great solution for backing up individual PCs, in addition to operating as a file server. I am currently using a number of different NAS products in both my small business and my home. Here is a summary of the pros and cons of the three models I am currently using: Netgear's ReadyNAS Duo, EMC Iomega's ix2, and LaCie's Ethernet Disk RAID NAS. I'll call out only areas in which I see significant differences between the products. Also, this review is intended mainly for small office users - the features you might care about for a home NAS are likely to be different (e.g., you'd probably care about how well it works as an iTunes library or for streaming movies, neither of which is key in our office setting). Here goes: 1) Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. This is a smaller, two-drive version of Netgear's ReadyNAS product (originally developed by a company called Infrant, which Netgear acquired). It takes up very little space, uses relatively little power, and is fairly quiet. Reads and writes to this device are very fast, which is important when running backups. The ReadyNAS has a particularly robust feature set when it comes to backing up the NAS to another device on the network. This is important, since even with RAID, it's possible that the whole device will fail (e.g., if the power supply goes bad), so you want to make sure you back up your NAS regularly. Setup isn't hard, but you have to know what you're doing - this device is clearly targeted at somewhat technical users who know the terminology and are willing to work through all the configuration menus. This is our primary file server in our office, and it has been a reliable workhorse. About once every 2-3 months, I need to log on to fix something that has glitched - other than that, the ReadyNAS Duo has required no effort beyond setup. It's one of the best small NAS products I've used. 2) Iomega ix2. Iomega is now owned by EMC, the company that creates the monster-sized storage devices for
