I bought a DNS-323 one year ago and it has been on ever since, serving up files reliably to my PC/Mac home network, downloading torrents, and streaming videos to my PS3/XBOX 360 (after installing Twonky Media Server). Based on my mostly positive experience with D-link products and price-to-features ratio, I decided to stick with the brand. I had wasted money on a Galaxy Metal Gear NAS, and read mostly lukewarm reviews for Netgear, Iomega, Linksys, and other makers. Other NAS devices like the DLNA-enabled Buffalo Technology LinkStation Live were attractive, but their price point or storage capacity was not. I need a large number of bays to create a centralized media server. When I outgrew the DNS-323, I bought a DNS321 2-bay when I really should have applied that $130 toward this 4-bay product instead. I wanted to consolidate the half dozen 1 TB external drives I had sitting around and network them so I didn't have to keep plugging and unplugging USB cables when I wanted to retrieve files. My home network is heterogeneous and I also needed the ability to write large files (4 GB+) to the drives. FAT32 is the only mutually writable format across XP and Mac, but it has a 4 GB filesize limit, making it impractical for my movie storage needs. The D-Link uses a Linux file system (ext2 or ext3, your choice), so filesize concerns are now gone. I've had this product for a week, and so far so good. The device can be configured from any web browser, so you don't need the CD (which is a Windows-only configuration app). I have 1 TB Hitachi and WD drives inside. Build quality is solid (made of thick aluminum). It's a brick of a device and looks quite durable. For the price, I am not expecting world class security and many bells and whistles. I just need it for storing my personal files and media on my home network, and stream them, and for that, it works to my satisfaction. The iTunes server works very nicely. For file transfers, I FTP to it and do all my copying that way. For some reason, the Mac is a lot faster (20MB/sec) than copying from XP (10MB/sec). Vista is the worse, and I usually get 5MB/sec. It would've been really great for D-link to include BitTorrent support for this, like the DNS-323. Maybe in a future firmware update. All in all, I'm quite happy with this product. I don't place heavy expectations on it and don't demand $1,500 server performance from a $370 device. It was the cheapest 4-bay NAS I could find for the features I wanted and gives great overall performance for the price. You can install telnet on it (look for Fonz's funplug) and open the device up to more hacking if you are so inclined. Excellent NAS at a Great Price By James Thomas There weren't a lot of positive reviews out there but I took a chance and bought this NAS and I am very happy I didn't listen to the bad reviews listed here and another site. This was the cheapest 4 drive NAS I could find and it is from a reputable company and it works great. Since I bought it I see that it has come down in price which makes it even better of a deal. Now that I know how well it performs this is a no brainer when compared to all the higher priced 4 Bay NAS available (cough...Netgear). The NAS itself is very well built...solid construction and not flimsy plastic like some of the others I have read about. Installing the drives in the NAS is very sturdy. You do not need to install rails like some other companies and don't have to worry about anything snapping. Drive bays are all numbered and has the newest firmware now has automatic power throttling fans (when I first turned on the unit the fans didn't start up and I thought the unit was defective and then 1 minute later they

I must say, this has to be one of the most sophisticated pieces of electronic equipment that I've ever owned. I don't even know where to begin. Did I mention this thing is amazing? I was running a Bose Lifestyle 48 prior to this, but when I finally decided to make the most of HDMI connections, I shelved the Bose and stepped up to the ONKYO. What a breath of fresh air! There are so many features of the TX-NR906 that I like. Starting with the remote control--I'm sure it's common practice nowadays for receiver remotes to be fairly smart, but this guy is really bright. I've managed to teach it all the commands from my three main remote controls (TV, BD & CD Players), more or less, just by pointing the controllers at each other and clicking. I'm referring to commands that aren't usually part of a universal controller's arsenal. The large number of connection choices are really coming in handy, as well. I'm maxing out the HDMI inputs and have one of the two outputs connected to my TV. There's a ton of digital audio options as well. The front panel offers a number of connection choices, including a USB port for playing MP3s. Another aspect of this receiver that I really like is the fact that this system not only sounds phenomenal when playing movies, but sounds equally as incredible playing CDs or listening to music from my PC. With previous systems it always seemed like one was better than the other, but with the TX-NR906, I really feels like I'm getting audiophile quality sound from all components. Oh yeah, did I mention? HD FM radio sounds phenomenal! I don't have XM or Sirius yet, but that's on the short list of near term upgrades. There's an antennae connection for both. This receiver is the hub of my home theater. Putting things in perspective, my setup includes a Samsung LN46A750 46-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color, Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player, a Sony 5-Disc Carousel CD Player, Dell XPS Pentium D 3.0 GHz/3.0 GB RAM/VisionTek Radeon HD4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express Graphics Card, Playstation 3 80GB, Motorola digital cable box/DVR , and Aperion Audio's Intimus 5T Hybrid HD speaker system. All this, combined with the TX-NR906, really sounds and looks incredible. I'm utilizing HDMI for video on all components. I'm also supplementing the digital cable box's audio with a coaxial cable. Similarly, I'm augmenting the BD Player's audio by connecting audio cables via the multichannel jacks. I bought the TX-NR906 in October 2008 and so far, I haven't found anything I dislike. The only minor thing I will point out is with the remote control. When you are teaching it commands from your other remotes, you might have to try it a couple of times. At first, I thought that some of the commands weren't going to be able to be taught, but I stuck with it and eventually was able to teach it all commands. No big deal, just don't give up if it doesn't work right away. Western Digital MyBook 1 TB - Great Capacity But Shorter Lived Than Other MyBooks By Mark The Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB Hard Drive has great capacity but might not be well suited for this design. I've had great luck with my Western Digital drives, but may have bitten off more than I could chew with this 1 TB model. The bottom line is I now think that 1 TB might be too much capacity for a USB-only connection. Even though it might not be because of the size I did experience a hardware issue with the 1 TB model that had to be repaired. That was the first HD failure I've had with any of these WD external drives. The larger capacity means that the disk geometry has to work harder for the same form factor. When you consider that neither the speed nor the buffer were improved with this model, it's easier to see why the performance is slightly less than the 500 GB model. Ultimately I think it might make sense to step down to the Western Digital 500GB My Book Home Edition or the Western Digital My Book Premium 500 GB model instead. If you need 1 TB you might want to look at the Premium, Home, Studio or Professional versions in that capacity. I am nervous because of the negative press some of those have gotten, but the extra and faster interfaces would have to be better than this USB only Essentials version. For a 1 TB drive, the buffer has to get larger. This guy is still limited by the 480 Mps connection speed of USB 2.0 but gives you only a fraction of that in production. You can unplug the AC adapter to manually power it down from behind, or it will power down with your computer. The AC adapter helps it perform a little faster than the USB powered ones. The software utilities should be deleted by anybody but the most novice user. Just do cut and paste backups instead and use some other shareware or NTFS if you need to enable encryption. Connecting WD drives to different systems has always been a plus, and this drive connected to my Windows XP, Vista or Mac OS X computers. The only factor that should change whether or not you get this drive or another one would be size and connection type. Obviously, WD makes Pro and other versions of these drives that have firewire and SATA connectors. For most Mac users, firewire 2 connectivity is a must. I did experience my first drive failure with the 1 TB after only 3 months of use. From now on I'm stepping up to the higher end models for this capacity. Still, I may have just gotten a bad one and you might be luckier. Pros + Works well on multiple platforms: Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS X + Nice 16 MB buffer for faster copying speeds is still acceptable + New sleek body, more pleasing to the eye + Turns on and off with your computer + Very easy installation, virtually plug and play + Integrates nicely with my growing stable of WD MyBook drives + 1 TB truly is amazing capacity in one drive Cons - 1 TB capacity is probably the largest you would want for USB transfer with a 16 MB buffer - Software will only be useful for novice users and is not very good (after several years of these drives being on the market) - New shiny body attracts fingerprints and dust, may not appeal to everyone - Transfer speed still limited by USB only connection, must step up for FireWire ports - Price for 1 TB of capacity not as good as some smaller drives in $ price per gigabyte - AC adapter for power, not USB powered Conclusion This drive is great for those who want a large capacity drive. It's better to get a pair to guard against drive failures and backup your backup. Watch the price and try to get it on sale. DeKeyser Sometimes you buy something and you spend alot of money and just don't feel like you have gotten your moneys worth or don't use it enough to justify to yourself the purchase. Well, for me, the Archos device is just about the best purchase that I have ever made. It is just incredible. I literally use it every day. I take it on the train. I take it backpacking. I watch TV in bed before going to sleep. I even watch it at work occasionally. I really have no complaints whatsoever on this device! I previously purchased the Archos 604 30GB model. And yes, I bought all the plugins... This purchase was for the Wifi and higher resolution than my 604. After firmware upgrade it has worked flawlessly. Everything else on the device is just great. Let me say that I purchased the video iPod and the video itself looks great but it is SO SMALL! The screen size on this is perfect. I actually went thru alot of pain to get VIDEO ON THE IPOD! Well, this baby will play alot of formats the ipod will not. mpeg2, vob, avi, mpeg4. Just buy the plugins and you are good to go. Yes, its a little more expense.. blah blah blah To do movie conversion I use Nero Recoder for ipod (mpeg4). For TV shows I used bittorrent. :) Legally of course :) Somehow there are alot of negative comments about the device. I don't understand. I've had the 604 for about 6 months and still rave about it. The 605 is just as nice. If you don't own one already I'd recommend getting the 30GB one if you can afford it. The flash is nice for expansion but is slower for copying files to the device. Flash is getting much cheaper (2GB SD card for ~$20 now...) though. Anyway, if you want to watch video get the Archos. If you want a music player buy an iPod. If you want people to think you have money buy an iTouch. Hope my comments were useful to you. If you buy it and are dissappointed I will be too. The following is added after having the unit for over a month: - I still love it - Never had ANY problems playing video - Never had ANY problems playing music - Lockup has occurred using Web Browser. They are not frequent and I am assuming that Archos will continue to make the product more robust with Opera. They have yet to release the widgets so my guess is that they are working on it. So... still very happy with Web Browser - Complaints about having special cable are goofy (see iPod cable) - The Media Server option is GREAT! I have a Maxtor NAS drive which supports uPnP so I don't have to copy stuff onto the device itself. For shows > 1hr I copy them to the device because the fast forward does not work with the media server. (If you use PC and share then use the file browser, it does) All being said, I would lower the stars to 4.5 because of the lockups during Web Browsing. Hope the additional comments help you. Thanks Update on Dec 11: New firmware makes the device even better. Haven't seen any lockups using the webbrowser. And now it supports flash games. To record t.v. you need the docking station and to download a proprietary t.v. program guide using the company supplied Archoslink software. The problem is that you can't download the tv program guide due to some defect in the Archoslink software. Archos has only told me that they have referred this problem to the engineers but I have heard nothing for a month I am not sure if this problem also effects the WiFi versions, but I would definitely not recommend buying this item until they have worked things out. Even then, the interface it very confusing and difficult to use particularly from the machine. The navigation is not at all intuitive and even once you learn the quirky system you still make a lot of mistakes at is that poorly designed. The company web site shares the software's poor design. For example to download the Archoslink software you need to search create an account with the serial and model numbers of both the machine and the docking station, and then confirm you information and search around for the software. The web site does not save your log in and when you click on a download the archoslink software link it takes you back to the log in page. The website has not have a search function and the software is not under the downloads link where you would expect it. The device also seems quite limited in they format of files it will play. You even need to purchase a codex to common types of files and many are not supported. There seem to be a number of similar devices out there that make a better choice. Do not be fooled by what at first seems like a low price for such a device. The added cost of the docking station and the necessary codex software significantly raise the cost and the time it takes to set up and frustration to use really add up. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Player...Great Price By D. Mack First, I bought the 405 because I did not want to fool around with a hard drive (the 405 has a 2GB internal flash drive and an SD slot for adding memory) and I did not want to fool around with wifi. Hard drives that get moved around alot break and wifi for small devices tends to be unreliable. That said, so far (one week) I'm very satisfied with this player. The screen (3.5") is easy to read. I use Microsoft Explorer to click-and-drag music files (whole albums and individual songs) onto the flash drive. You can sync with Windows Media Player, but it seems like an unnecessary hassle. I understand the complaints of the other reviewers. The advertised DVR should work. But, unfortunately, the more complicated inexpensive electronics get the more likely they'll disappoint. I also bought the mini dock...it allows you to plug the thing into the wall outlet to charge, you can hook up an external portable hard drive to hold more files, and you can patch out the picture on the screen to your tv. For $129 and another $29 for the dock I'm very happy. I haven't downloaded any video files and don't know if I will. The ones they included (dumb unit info) play fine. Cool little media screen! By Cory Dzbinski I picked this up from Ritz when they were closing one of their locations. Grabbed 4 of them for only $20 each, kept one and sold the rest on E Bay. It's a cool player with a high res screen that handles all kinds of media formats and with a separate doc can even double as a DVR for your TV shows which you can then watch on your TV or on the Archos 405. Waal I was looking for a network attached storage system with a small footprint and low power requirement that was RAID1 configurable. The Buffalo unit exceeded my expectations - it was easy to install on my network of 4 computers and I'm well satisfied with its performance and ease of use. Lack of Support By Daniel Pires OSX Lion was announced about a year ago now, BUFFALO failed to work on a firmware update even though Apple released the OS to developers months before it's launch. So if you intend to buy this product for the TIME MACHINE feature on your MAC, well you my friend are SOL. So what's worse then misleading advertising on the box and on Amazon (that clearly states Time Machine Compatible)? The fact that this item may not even get the firmware update needed because it's an older model. Yep, I just got off the phone with their tech support and that's the message they gave me. So let me ge this straight, I bought this item in the Spring, used it for about 3 months at which point I updated my PC to Lion and now I have nothing more then a paper weight?! BUFFALO you've seen my last dollar. Looking though their forums you'll find many whom unlike me don't use this for their home, instead they rely on BUFFALO to provide their business with back ups and server needs. I can't even imagine the costs, damages and headaches they must be going through. Unfinished Product with bugs that keep it from a top-notch player By WDH Without a doubt, Denon rasied the bar with this product, but it is readily apparent they rushed production without proper Quality Assurance. The player suffers from a persistent bug that is quite enfuriating - it simply will not turn on once powered off. Multiple owners have reported this issue on AVSForums. Long story short, the player can be revived with a hard reset (via disconnecting the power for five minutes), which is a bit absurd considering the price and its the third generation of blu ray player released by Denon. Additionally, as of January 2011, the player does not have 3D playback capability despite its promised release via a firmware update in the fall of 2010. This is a big disappointment considering it is actually well-advertised on denon's website as a key feature. Lastly, the power-up or initial ready times have nearly doubled from its predecessor (the 1610) from 14 seconds to 26 seconds. In layman's terms, the player now takes nearly half a minute to open the disc drive when powered off. This is the longest time I can remember in a modern blu ray player. Outside of these two complaints, Denon has made strides in more compotent DVD playback; the 1611 excels with deinterlacing and cadence recognition, although most cadences require a momentarily lock-on. Video deinterlacing is still mediocre and aliasing does occur, but it's head and shoulders over the 1610. The player's source direct function is ideal for mating with an AVR with a proper video processing chipset (like the Denon AVR-2311ci and above models). That said, after a week of ownership with this player it is clear Denon rushed production and did not "work all the bugs out." Bit disappointing considering many lower-priced players offer 3D playback, more streaming options, wifi connectivity, and do not require unplugging for five minutes when you want to turn it on. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Denon DPB-1611UD Universal Disc - BluRay player By ccmango I bought this unit because of Denon's reputation and because I have a Denon receiver that I like. It's convenient to be able to control the player on the single receiver remote. The player is simple and handsome in appearance. The picture seemed really good on my 54" Panasonic plasma TV. There were a couple of annoying things about its behavior, though. First, the disc drawer is very slow to open and close. I realize that there might be a lot of thinking that the electronics has to do, but it's exasperating to have to stand there with the disc in your hand for so long ( almost 10 secs sometimes). Second, this player has a noisy transport. You can hear the thing clunking from across the room. Finally, it had a strong smell of burning plastic when operating. I thought sure it was burning up, but nothing happened--for four months of light usage--until finally it died and would not power up. I guess it was burning up -- slowly. Then when I went to get service repairs, I found out that Denon contracts its warranty service to a TV repair shop across town that was only open on weekdays. The shop said it would be one month minimum to even find out what was wrong with it. They said that Denon does not support "board level" swap repairs which as a result requires that the faulty components on the circuit boards be identified and replaced with... whatever components the shop can find that will work--Denon does not provide their warranty shops with factory component parts for repairs. Overall, this unit was not worth the headache and I would not buy it--or any other Denon product again. I think that the quality is generally good for the money, but I would suggest that if one wanted to buy it, it would be wise to call the local Denon warranty repair shop and find out what kind of repair support Denon is providing to them--and to you the buyer,
